APRIL HEALTH TIP

April 1 is the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day.

 

Make the most of your walk anytime!

There’s no one right time of day to get moving. Follow these tips from the American Heart Association whether you walk morning, noon, or night.

 

If you like to walk as soon as your feet hit the floor……congratulations! You’re getting your day started right. The night before, get your walking clothes and shoes ready and program your music device with up tempo music.

 

Stretch your calves and hamstrings at the end of the walk (watch a morning news show or check your emails while you do) Be sure to wear reflective clothing if it’s dark

 

If you’d rather eat and run on your lunch break……

Schedule your “run appointment” on your work calendar.

Recruit a colleague to go with you.

 

Other than athletic shoes, you may be able to wear your work clothes.

Bring a healthy lunch or pick a route where you can grab a sandwich at the end.

 

If walking after work is more your thing….

Have a light snack around 4pm so you don’t experience a late day energy dip and talk yourself out of walking. (Try yogurt and a handful of almonds or an apple and ounce of cheese.)

Pick an area not heavily trafficked since rush hour traffic can increase pollutants.

 

Walk tall and do some backward shoulder rolls to relieve stress. If it’s dark, wear reflective clothing.
